Pottery Templates & Resources

Printable PDFs to help you handbuild mugs, vases, cups, and more. Designed for consistency, creativity, and ease in the studio.

What Are Pottery Templates?

Pottery templates are printable outlines that guide you in shaping clay slabs into mugs, cups, vases, and more. Unlike molds, they allow you to handbuild freely while ensuring consistency in size and form.

Each template is designed and tested in my studio. They are downloadable PDFs that you can print at home, cut out, and use again and again.

Collection of digital instructional sheets for making a clay object, featuring diagrams, step-by-step instructions, and images demonstrating techniques like rolling, cutting, and joining clay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use a pottery template?

Print the PDF, cut out the shape, trace it on your clay slab, then assemble your piece before firing.

Do I need special tools?

No, just a printer, scissors, clay, and your basic hand-building tools. If you want to up-level your system, you can invest in some cookie cutters and transfer the templates into balsa wood, plywood, or tar paper.

Are the templates reusable?

Yes, you can reprint them as many times as you like.

Can I resize the templates?

Yes, you can scale the PDF when printing to make larger or smaller versions.

What about the license?

The license is very permissive, but if you plan to make many mugs with these templates and resell them, please reach out before. These are my original designs and I appreciate being contacted first.

Can beginners use these templates?

Yes, they are great for beginners. Each template is simple to follow, and you can find extra tutorials in my blog and YouTube channel.

Do I need a specific clay type?

No, templates work with any clay body suitable for handbuilding. I often use porcelain, but stoneware and earthenware work too.
